J. Richard Jenkins (Dick) was born 5 December 1926 in Auckland,New Zealand to J. Howard Jenkins and Cora Stephenson; his father was serving as Mission President at the time. He married Rose Bennett on 9 September 1952. They have three children, Maren, Cathy and John.
Dick served a mission in New Zealand from 1948 to 1950; his mission Journal is available on-line. His assigned areas throughout his mission were in the northern part of the North Island, usually in the area around Whangarei. For much of 1949 and into 1950, he served as the editor of the Church's magazine in New Zealand, the Te Karere. While he was working in the mission home, his father passed away from a heart attack.
After returning from his mission, he graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in architecture. Some of the buildings he designed are his homes at 1403 Roxbury Road and 1491 Roxbury Road and the Monument Park Stake Center.
From the mid-1960's through his death, he worked for the State of Utah inspecting plans for nursing homes.
Dick was diagnosed with renal cancer in 1978. An operation to remove the tumor was successful, but it had grown into the renal vein and metastasized. Dick was able to work until October 1979, when his increasing illness made it necessary for him to take a medical retirement. Dick died of lung cancer on 4 January 1980. He is buried in Sunset Lawn.
